How to Get the Transcript of a YouTube Video (4 Ways)

Most YouTube videos have a transcript, even when nobody uploaded one, because YouTube generates captions automatically. The right way to get it depends on what you want to do with the text: read it once, copy it into a document, ask an AI about it, or pull thousands of them into your own software.

1. Use YouTube's Show transcript button

On a computer, open the video, expand the description below it, and click Show transcript. A panel opens beside the video with every line and its timestamp, and clicking a line jumps to that moment.

This is fine for reading, but the panel is awkward to copy: timestamps come along with every line, and there is no way to download it as a file. It is also hidden in the mobile app on many devices.

2. Paste the link into a free transcript tool

A transcript generator takes the video link and returns the whole transcript as clean text. The free TranscriptYT tool needs no sign-up: paste a link, then copy the text with or without timestamps, or download it as TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON, CSV, or Markdown.

It also lets you switch to any caption language the video has, translate the transcript into 150+ languages, and generate an AI summary with timestamped notes.

  • Copy the link: Share → Copy link in the YouTube app or browser.
  • Paste it at transcript-yt.com/youtube-transcript and click Get transcript.
  • Copy the text or pick a download format.

3. Ask an AI assistant to read the video

If what you really want is a summary, answers, or notes, connect an AI assistant to YouTube. With the TranscriptYT MCP server added to Claude, ChatGPT Codex, or Cursor, you paste a YouTube link in the chat and the assistant fetches the transcript itself before answering.

Setup takes about a minute and uses a free API key. The MCP guide has copy-paste instructions for each app.

4. Use an API for many videos or automation

For a playlist, a whole channel, or transcripts inside your own app or workflow, call the YouTube Transcript API. One request returns the transcript as JSON with timestamps, or directly as text or a subtitle file. Batch requests take up to 50 videos, or a playlist or channel link.

Videos without any captions are transcribed from the audio with AI, so the API returns text even where YouTube shows no transcript.

curl "https://transcript-yt.com/v1/transcript?url=https://youtu.be/5f3Pn-N6yLc&format=text" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TRANSCRIPTYT_KEY"

What if a video has no transcript?

If Show transcript is missing, the uploader either turned captions off or YouTube could not generate them, which is common for music, very short clips, and some languages. Free tools that read captions cannot help in that case. The API's AI transcription fallback listens to the audio instead and is billed per minute of audio.
